Secret to Healthy Balloon Mollies!

Stop overpaying for conditioners! If you’ve wondered how to keep your Balloon Mollies thriving, the secret is in the water.

This cost-effective DIY recipe mimics professional-grade remineralizers (such as Seachem Equilibrium) to ensure stable parameters and healthy, active mollies.

Essential DIY Setup

  • Dechlorinator: Use Sodium Thiosulfate crystals. It is far cheaper than commercial brands and essential for neutralizing the chloramine found in Singapore’s tap water.

  • Biological Powerhouse: Sponge Filters are great. They provide the gentle flow Balloon Mollies need, combined with massive surface area for the beneficial bacteria that keep your water pristine.

  • Natural Buffering: Add Coral Chips to your filter or tank. They slowly release calcium carbonate, stabilizing your pH and preventing the “crashes” that stress sensitive balloon-variety fish.

The Recipe (For 50L of Tap Water)

To hit an ideal 10-15 GH level, mix the following:

  • 10-50g Marine or Non-iodized salt (for slime coat protection)

5g Epsom Salts (Magnesium for muscle/nerve health)

  • 5g Calcium Sulfate (For skeletal strength)

  • 4g Potassium Sulfate (For electrolyte balance and vitality)

  • Optional: 2g Baking Soda (if pH is below 7.5)

Prepare a dry mix of above as stock to be used during your water changes.

All these ingredients can either be bought cheaply in your neighborhood supermarket or online (Shopee and Lazada for Singaporean hobbyists)

How to Prepare:

  1. Dissolve: Mix powders into 1L of warm water. (Calcium Sulfate will remain slightly cloudy; this is normal).

  2. Add Slowly: Pour into the tank over 24 hours to avoid osmotic shock.

  3. Maintenance: For every 10L of fresh water added during weekly changes, dose ~2.5g of your dry mix to maintain stability.
